This Autumn/Winter 2016-17 trend was seen on the runways in collections by Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Isabel Marant and Calvin Klein – but how can we mere mortals wear it?
Look #1: 90s update
Tartan Look 1: 90s Update featuring VB handbag
Plaid and tartan were all the rage in the grungy nineties. If you want to channel Cher, Dionne and Tai from Clueless, your needs are simple: a tiny skirt, crop top, snug cardi, and over-the-knee socks. Or, for a modern update, go for opaque tights and knee-high boots. Nineties bags are far too small for a modern woman’s needs. So find a tote in a contrasting colour and you’re good to go.
Bonus 90s look: Tai from Clueless
This look gives everyone’s favourite clueless best friend a designer update, with a soft Michael Kors cardi, Alice + Olivia tartan skirt and these gorgeous Elie Saab boots.
Look #2: perfect punk
It would be rude to write about tartan and not mention queen of punk courture, Vivienne Westwood. This look combines a leather jacket by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Burberry biker boots and a tartan skirt. Finished with Vivienne Westwood hardware in the form of this chunky watch and multi-strand necklace, the look wouldn’t be complete without a band t-shirt.
Look #3: Western
The Western look is easy to pull off and surprisingly festive, with its pops of red and a snug Aran jumper. Team your fave designer jeans with a Tommy Hilfiger tartan shirt and soft leather accessories from Saint Laurent.
